Heavy Attendance and Strong Bidding at Final Sale of 2008

December 2008 / Nashua, NH:

The first snowfall of the year and treacherous roads didn’t stop a very large crowd from attending and participating in our last auction of the 2008 season. With over 1100 items to bring to the block, the auction started promptly at 10:00 am with a tribute to Veterans in honor of Pearl Harbor Day. Bidding was strong all through the day. Lot No. 1, an H&K P7 M13 Semi-Auto Pistol left the block for $1,410.00. The two cased Browning Medalist’s drew strong interest. Lot No 11, the Gold Line Engraved pistol sold for a strong $2,115.00, while the other, Lot 13 left over presale for $1,880.00. Lot 12, the Hi-Power Engraved Renaissance pistol left for $2,115.00 as well.

Lot No 15, an antique factory engraved and gold plated Remington-Elliot Deringer with some very well executed scrollwork and punch-dot shading, drew strong interest. The pistol in its original factory morocco leather covered wood case with red velour lining is making one collector very happy, it left the block for $3,878.00.

A nice Winchester Model 21 Skeet Double Barrel Shotgun, Lot No. 26 sold for $3,525.00. Parker shotguns are always a favorite of our buyers. Lot No. 27, a VH Grade Side by Side on a No. 1 Frame in 16 gauge, sold for $2,350.00, followed by Lot No 28, a VH Grade Side by Side on a No. 1 ½ Frame in 12 gauge sold for $2,115.00. Lot No. 35, a Special Order Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle left the auction over its presale estimate, going for $3, 290.00. Lot No 41, a very nice engraved Colt Single Action Army, 3rd generation Silver Plated Revolver in a glass top walnut case came to the block and sold for $2,350.00.

M60 Machine Gun sold for $22,325.00 Class III firearms were feature items in the December sale. Lot S1, a U.S. M60 Machine Gun by Maremont in 7.62mm caliber complete with bipod and folding rear aperture sight achieved a strong bid of $22,325.00. A Colt Thompson Model 1921 shipped to “N.Y. State Police/Dept. of Corrections” left the auction for $21,150.00. A Mauser Schnellfeuer Model 712 Select Fire Machine Pistol, Lot No S5, reached $14,100.00. It included an earlier C-96 stock as well as a brown leather harness.

Lot S6, a W.W.II German STG44 Select Fire Assault Rifle by C.G. Haenel achieved $12,925.00. Lot S8, a DLO AKM Assault Rifle with Underfolder Stock, left the sale for $11,750.00. Lot S9, S10 and S12, Fleming Auto Sears for H&K Guns, each registered in 3 calibers, .223, .308 and 9mm each achieved a strong $11,750.00. A World War I Colt Vickers Model 1918 Aircraft Machine Gun drew strong attention, as it went for a strong bid over the presale, $10,575.00.

Most of the assault type rifles continued strong showings throughout the day. Lot 51, an H&K Model 94 A3 Semi-Auto Paramilitary Carbine reached a robust $5,640.00. Lot 54, a Steyr AUG S.A. Semi-Auto Rifle left for $3,878.00. A Poly-Tech Legend AK-47/S Semi Auto Paramilitary Rifle, Lot No 56 sold shortly after for $1,939.00. Another over estimate bid took the Mitchell Arms M-90 Paramilitary Semi-Auto Rifle, Lot No 66 sold for $1,704.00.

Large Crowd Drove Strong Bidding in J.C. Devine August Auction

Revolutionary War British Long Land Pattern "Brown Bess" Flintlock Musket by Jordan

Lot No. 40, a Revolutionary War British Long Land Pattern “Brown Bess” Flintlock Musket by Jordan sold for $17,625.00.


Nashua, NH All refreshed from his winter stay in Florida, Joseph C. Devine, Chairman and Head Auctioneer, got the action started promptly at 10:00 AM. Bidding was strong right from the start as illustrated by Lot No. 1, the H&K Model P7M10 Semi-Auto Pistol sold for $1,528.00. Lot No. 10, a beautiful Belgian Browning Medalist Renaissance Model Semi-Auto Pistol achieved $3,408.00.
A rare WWI Winchester British No. 3 Mark I* Pattern 14W (F) (T) Bolt Action Sniper went well above the presale, Lot No. 14 sold for $7,638.00. Military rifles continue to do well, as exampled by Lot No 18, a U.S. National Match M1 Garand Semi-Auto Rifle by Springfield, leaving the auction for $2,938.00. Lot 19, a Rare U.S.M.C. Prototype M1 Garand .22 Caliber Training Rifle by Marlin, it sold for a strong bid of $5,875.00. An extradinarily nice U.S. Johnson Automatics Model 1941 followed with the same strong bid of $5,875.00.
Engraved Moore's  Patent Firearms Co. No. 1 Deringer
A very small firearm listed as Lot 29 in the catalog, an exceptional engraved Moore’s Patent Firearms Co. No. 1 Deringer came to the block. This had very well done factory scroll engraving, and featured an American eagle with shield on the back of the grip, it retained over 90% original gold plating, and the barrel retained over 90% of its original silver plating. This outstanding Deringer achieved $11,750.00.
Lot No. 28, an antique Colt Second Model Deringer with factory scroll engraving left the block at $4,406.00. Model 1911 pistols are always in demand at Devine auctions. Strong examples of this were Lot No. 37, a U.S. Gov’t. Model 1911 Semi Auto Pistol by Springfield Armory which sold above presale going for $4,406.00. Lot 38, A U.S. Gov’t. Model 1911 Semi-Auto by Remington UMC got the same strong bid. Lot No. 39, a Mauser C-96 Cone-Hammer Broomhandle drew strong bids, leaving the block for $6,463.00.
Lot No. 40, a Revolutionary War British Long Land Pattern “Brown Bess” Flintlock Musket by Jordan came to the block and was actively bid for on the phone and on the floor, and sold on the floor for a bid of $17,625.00.

A cased pair of Colt Officer’s Model Target Revolvers presented to famed race car driver Barney Oldfield. Mr. Oldfield started his career as a bicycle racer in 1894. He became the first person to drive a car at 60 miles per hour in 1902. He raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1914 and 1916, becoming the first person to run a 100 mile per hour lap. These accomplishments caused many a traffic cop of the time to query any speeder they stopped “Who do you think you are? Barney Oldfield?” Oldfield last raced in 1917, the year these revolvers were delivered. These revolvers were handed down to our consignor from his grandfather, Wm. Henry Eshbaugh, family history is Oldfied gave these revolvers to fellow racer (and famed WWI Pilot) Eddie Rickenbacker, who then gave them to his acquaintance Wm. Henry Eshbaugh. These historic revolvers, Lot No. 60 left the auction to a floor bid of $5,640.00.
Lot No. 72, the Polish Radom all matching semi-auto pistol marked “(eagle) 1939” with pre-war holster saw very active bidding from the floor as well as absentee and phone activity. It sold for $6,110.00. This auction included several Trench Shotguns. A strong example was Lot No. 79. This rare World War One Remington Model 10-A U.S. Military Slide Action Trench Shotgun sold for a strong bid of $8,113.00. A World War II Winchester Model 12 Slide Action Trench Shotgun left the block at $4,700.00. Bidding continued strong throughout the day. Milford, NH: After 18 years of holding our firearms auctions in Bedford, NH, Joseph C. Devine, Chairman of the 33 year old specialty firearms auction company is very pleased to announce that they will be conducting their auctions at the new luxurious Radisson Hotel in Nashua, NH. (Formerly the Sheraton Tara). The new location will provide easy access, as well as additional comfort to all of our customers. Our first sale of the year is being held in the Nashua Radisson’s Grand Ballroom on February 3, 2008.

The sale will feature more than twenty Class III, fully transferable firearms which include the likes of M14, Uzi-B, Sten MKII, H&R Reising, Mac 10, Colt Thompson 1928, and MP-40. Some other fine examples include a first year production model of a 1911 U.S. Army Colt Semi-Auto Pistol, in mint condition, a World War II U.S. Military Colt Service Model Ace, and a Commercial Colt Ace Semi-Auto Pistol, serial # 276. Also available, a pre-war Colt Single Action Army Revolver in .38/40 caliber, and a Pre-war Smith & Wesson non-registered .357 magnum revolver. Some outstanding antique firearms include a like new Colt Lightning Slide Action Rifle in Medium Frame as well as a Second Year Production Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle.

A very nice pair of highly engraved Balkan Flintlock Pistols with Silver Wire Inlaid stocks and an Irish Flintlock Dueling/Target Pistol by Rigby, are included in the sale, as well as an early American Naval Dirk from the Battle of Plattsburgh. Antique Firearms Continue to Realize
Strong Prices at August 19th, 2007 Auction.

Bedford, NH On an very nice summer morning J.C. Devine, Inc. conducted its August auction at the Wayfarer Convention Center in Bedford, NH. With a large stack of absentee bids in hand, and a good size crowd in attendance, the sale started prompty at 10:00 AM with strong bidding. Early items sold within their presale estimates, with many surpassing the expected highs.
An example of this was Lot No. 8, an antique Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver which sold for $4,112.50, while Lot No. 14, a Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver did the same, leaving the floor at $1,997.50.

  
Lot No. 15, an engraved and inscribed S&W Model No. 1-1/2 in a blue leather case with a silk ribbon across the inside lid with the imprint “Hartley & Graham / New York” drew strong bidding on the floor as well as phone bids. This beautiful nickel plated revolver done in New York style scroll engraving with eaglehead and wolfhead on the sideplate went to a phone bidder for $13,512.50.

Our Class III selection of firearms always draws strong interest, and this sale was no exception. Lot No. 21, a cased West Hurley Auto Ordnance Model 1928 Thompson Submachine Gun achieved a respectable $14,687.50.

The Springfield Armory SAR-48 Select-Fire Assault Rifle, our Lot No. 23 went over the presale, leaving at $11,456.25. Lot No. 25, an M2 Select Fire Conversion of an Saginaw Steering Gear U.S. M1 Carbine sold for $5,581.25.
Antique firearms certainly have maintained their stronghold in the firearms world. Lot No. 42, a rare Parker Grade D3 Underlifter Damascus double barrel hammer shotgun on a Number 1 frame went over our estimates, selling for $3,290.00. Another very rare firearm, Lot No. 49, was a Fairbanks & Lovell all metal percussion smoothbore with Boston, Massachusetts roots dating back to 1835. It is an all iron gun, with a skeleton buttstock. It left the block for $1,175.00.

A couple of examples of Pre-Revolutionary War flintlock muskets are shown on page 1, being Lots 50 and 53. The first of these, a First Model British Brown Bess flintlock musket showed markings of “IORDAN [sic] / 1761” on the lockplate behind the cock, as well as a Crown over “GR” and a small broad arrow in front of the cock. A remarkable gun for its age, it left the auction for $12,925.00.
Lot No. 53 was a French Charleville Flintlock Musket. The musket measured 62-1/2” in overall length, with smoothbore .69 caliber barrel. This was another situation where buyer interest drove the price well over the presale estimates and achieved a very nice $8,695.00.

J.C. Devine, Inc.'s August 20th Auction sees rapidfire bidding, averaging 150 items per hour.

Bedford, NH The day may have started out with a fierce thunderstorm, but it was all smiles inside the Wayfarer Convention Center as a large crowd gathered to view and to buy at the J.C. Devine, Inc. August sale. Early bidding was strong as evidenced by the sale of a Pre-War Belgian Fabrique Nationale Hi-Power pistol with shoulder stock and holster. Lot No. 5 sold for $7,050.00. Bidding continued strong when Lot No 8, a casedColt 1849 Pocket Revolver made in 1864 went for a bid of $4,700.00.

A very beautiful pair of cased Colt Second Generation Single Action Army Revolvers, Lot No. 10, engraved and gold inlaid by Joe Condon and that were featured on page 506 of Colt Engraving, achieved a bid of $9,400.00.

Winchesters always maintain high interest at Devine auctions. Lot No. 11, a Winchester Third Model 1873 "Trapper" Carbine that we recently had added to the NFA Curio & Relic list, presale estimated at $3,000 to $4,000, achieved $5,875,00.
It was followed by Lot No. 14, an Ulrich engraved Winchester Second Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle that showed some use went for $9,987.50.

Lot No 15, a good looking Brass Framed Henry Civil War rifle achieved $21,150.00. A Colt Model 1855 Military Revolving Rifle, Lot No. 16, (shown above) sold over the presale estimate, achieving $9,400.00. Lot No. 20, a nice Parker PH Grade 16 Gauge double Barrel Shotgun on 0 Frame left the auction block for $3,525.00, again above the presale estimate.

A consecutively numbered cased pair of Austrian Double Barrel Side by Side Shotguns identified as "Best Quality" and made by Johann Springer's Erben drew lots of action from phone bidders and audience alike.
The pair were made in 1933 in 12 gauge with 2-5/8" chambers. This beautifully engraved pair left the auction with an Ohio bidder for a successful bid of $23,500.00 Our October 15th auction looks to be another outstanding sale. J.C. Devine, Inc.'s April Auction 2602, brings $1,000,000.

Bedford, NH: When 500 people show up to our auction and 347 of them register to buy, you know you will be having a good auction. People from 45 states, Canada, Switzerland, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Italy registered as buyers.
The top lot was no surprise. Lot No. 41, a Winchester Model 1866 Carbine, ivory stocked and elaborately engraved by Master Engraver Louis D. Nimschke sold to a Florida collector for $63,250., however, Lot No. 30, a Griffin & Howe Mauser 98 Sporting Rifle was a surprise. This Griffin & Howe, made in 1930 in caliber ".505 Gibbs/Magnum", presale estimated at $10,000/$15,000 went to Missouri for $24,150. Due to the large attendance, the 1,064 lots disappeared quickly, as the million dollars smoothly made its way to the cashier.

Lot No. 8, a nice 1900 Colt Auto Navy U.S. Marked made $9,775. A pair of African Elephant Tusks, lot No 20 sold to a New York buyer for $12,075. A very nice first model brass framed Henry Rifle went to Texas for $18,400.

A Winchester Model 1866 Rifle, engraved by John Ulrich made $16,100. A nice Colt Government Model National Match semi-auto pistol sold to an Iowa buyer for $15,000. Lot No. 52A, a pre-war Colt .22 L.R. to .45 A.C.P. Conversion Unit went to Georgia for $4,887. Lot No. 55, a nice Colt Woodsman 1st Series Match Target in its original box went to a Pennsylvania buyer for $3,220. A rare 1908 Swiss Mondragon semi-auto military rifle, Lot No. 61, sold for just over $6,000. Lot No. 70 was a good U.S. marked Colt M1855 military rifle that went to a New York dealer for $17,250.

Lot No. 83, an engraved Volcanic No. 1 lever action pistol drew much attention, with a presale estimate of $1,800/$2200, it left the auction block at $8,050. A New Hampshire built J. Brown half stock percussion sporting rifle was a good buy. Lot No. 114, with its custom built pine box, sold for $1,025. The next lot, No. 115, a gold and silver inlaid Japanese Matchlock rifle sold above its expected presale value selling for $1,750. Lot No. 185, a low grade Parker P.H. 16 Gauge Shotgun went to a Connecticut buyer for $4,140. Lot No. 200, a Winchester 1897 U.S. Military Trench Shotgun with bayonet estimated to sell for $2,250/$2,750 went to a California bidder for $5,635. The auction was enjoyed by all concerned.
