Sterling Silver Civil War Soldier´s I.D. Badge

The 1 1/8" tall shield is border engraved and has in script "J.H. Beard/ Co. C./ 25th Regt./Mass. Vol.". This had a "T" back fastening pin, which is now missing. Included are copies of internet databases which reveal that Jonas H. Beard was a 25 year-old farmer who enlisted as a Private on 9/28/61 in Lancaster, Mass. He was wounded at Cold Harbor, Va on 6/3/1864 and discharged for disability from Dale General Hospital on 7/10/1865. At the Cold Harbor engagement the regiment had 76 percent of its men killed, wounded, or taken prisoner. This regiment saw action as early as Feb 8, 1862 at Roanoke Island and several engagements in North Carolina until March of 1864 when it returned to Virginia. Twelve pages of information on the history of the regiment are included. This is a very attractive badge in fine condition.
